Gmail

Email for everyday communication

Gmail is an email app for sending, receiving and organising messages on an Android phone. It suits people who already use a Google Account, as well as households that need a familiar way to check school, work, service or personal email. The app can bring messages into one inbox, make it easier to search older conversations and help separate unwanted mail from the messages worth reading.

What to expect

• Read and reply to email from a phone, with conversation threads keeping related messages together.
• Search through the inbox to find messages, contacts and past correspondence.
• Use labels, folders and archive controls to keep the inbox manageable.
• Connect with other Google services, including Calendar, Chat and Meet, where those services are in use.
• Handle more than one email account from the same app, which can be useful on a shared or family phone.

Checks before handing it over

Gmail is closely tied to account access, so the main point to check is whose Google Account is signed in. A shared phone may show private conversations, saved contacts and calendar information if accounts are mixed together. It is worth checking notification settings too, since message previews can appear on the lock screen. Spam and phishing protection can reduce unwanted mail, but users should still be cautious with links, attachments and requests for personal information.

At a glance

Google LLC publishes Gmail in the Communication category. It has a 4.1 rating from about 14.2 million reviews and 10,000,000,000+ installs. Those figures show very broad use, but they do not indicate whether the app is the right fit for a particular person. For a user who needs straightforward access to Google-based email, it is a practical choice; for a shared device, account separation deserves attention.
